On 18th May 2017, a historic milestone in Indian medical science was achieved when a 21-year-old woman underwent a uterine transplant at Galaxy Care Hospital in Pune. Born without a womb, the young recipient received a life-changing gift from her 44-year-old mother, who selflessly donated her uterus with the hope that her daughter would one day experience motherhood.The complex procedure was led by Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar, Medical Director of Galaxy Care Hospital, Pune, India. The surgery lasted approximately nine hours, involving advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques for uterus retrieval, followed by open surgery for transplantation an approach considered groundbreaking in the field of reproductive medicine.In a remarkable display of surgical excellence, the Galaxy Care Hospital team also accomplished two successful uterus transplants within 48 hours, setting a new benchmark in the field.
Birth of India's First Uterus Transplant Baby
Seventeen months later, this extraordinary journey came full circle. Our 24-year-old uterus receiver, Meenakshi, successfully delivered a healthy baby girl via Caesarean section on 18th October 2018 at Galaxy Care Hospital, Pune. Weighing 1.45 kg at birth, the baby girl marked not only India's first uterine transplant birth but also the 12th uterus transplant baby in the world.

After conducting two successful uterine transplants in May 2017, the third successful uterine transplant was conducted on the January 2018 by the team of Galaxy Care Hospital. While the first two womb transplants were completed in approximately 9 hours, our team completed the transplant in 6 hours the third time. Earlier, these surgeries were globally performed through an operation. However, all the three womb transplants in Pune at Galaxy Care Hospital were performed through laparoscopic surgery that made the surgeries painless. This new technique not only made the surgery painless but also helped our patients in faster recovery. We have opened India's first Uterus Transplant OPD for our patients.
