Rare cancer surgery performed By Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar
In a path-breaking minimally invasive surgery, doctors at the Lokmanya Hospital in Nigdi, Pune, have successfully performed an operation upon a 50-year old patient. The patient was diagnosed with cancer in the pancreas.
However, one thing that has excited the doctors is the fact that till date very few cases have been performed worldwide using this laparoscopic Whipple resection technique.
The Whipple procedure is a rare surgery used to treat pancreatic cancer. Wherein, the head of the pancreas i.e. duodenum (the first part of the small intestine), a portion of the stomach and other nearby tissues are removed, all at the same time.
According to cancer surgeon Dr. Shailalesh Puntambekar, who along with laparoscopic surgeon Dr. Suprashant Kulkarni successfully performed an operation upon P. Kurmi at Lokmanya Hospital. This is the first case in Maharashtra and the second in India, after Dr. C Palanivelu from Coimbatore performed a similar procedure back in 2000.
Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar, who is also the medical director of Galaxy Care Hospital, was recently invited as a faculty at the Asia Pacific Laparoscopic Conference held in Kuala Lumpur from September 10-13 to provide a detailed presentation on this rare surgical procedure.
As Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar explained, "this technique of 'keyhole surgery' was adopted to not only reduce the time factor and decimate the blood and tissue loss but also to reduce the post-operative complications.
